How to trust God even when things don’t look like they should
Have you ever noticed the warning written on your car’s side mirror that says, “Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear?” Satan’s main tactic is to deceive all of mankind. The scripture says that he would deceive even the elect if possible. Satan’s deception works by warping and manipulating the truth and causing us to see things from his perspective rather than God’s.
For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if [it were] possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Matthew 24:24 KJV
Satan’s deception robs us.
History is full of Satan’s deceptive exploits. He robs us of our victories by deceiving us about God, ourselves, and others. He lies to us about our worth, God’s character and His love for us, our salvation, and the list goes on and on.
On June 16th, 2011, my husband, Henry, had a severe heart attack requiring a triple bypass. Months later, he had congestive heart failure, and we were told that a whole portion of his heart was not working. I prayed almost every day for eight years for God to give him a new heart.
I watched Henry continue to teach and minister throughout that time without that new heart. The doctors were astounded that he was looking and doing so well! However, his heart had not changed. The tests still showed a damaged heart. Henry went home to be with the Lord on November 18th, 2019. His heart just stopped beating.
God revealed an important truth.
I talked to a dear friend, and I told her how I prayed for eight years for Henry to have a new heart, and it never happened. I wasn’t mad at God. I trust Him. But I was still curious about why God seemingly didn’t answer my prayer. My friend said, “Hold up a minute! God did give Henry a new heart every day!”
And I realized that God gave him the strength for today, every day! God was faithful to provide Henry with everything he needed for each day. And Henry certainly walked and thrived in that provision from God from day to day.
It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 [They are] new every morning: great [is] thy faithfulness. Lamentations 2:22-23 KJV
The importance of faith for today
During that conversation with my friend, I had a revelation of how important it is to simply be content with the strength for today. It makes the understanding of casting our cares on Him come to life.
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 1 Peter 5:7 KJV
And also the verse that says that today is the day of salvation, and so many more scriptures that talk about trusting God for today.
(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now [is] the accepted time; behold, now [is] the day of salvation.) 2 Corinthians 6:2 KJV
Satan’s deception keeps us from seeing things from God’s perspective
Sometimes we expect God to do things the way we initially understand, but God is so big. Often when things don’t appear to us the way we think they should look, we believe God has not met us. But the Bible says:
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV
God gave Henry a miracle every day! The enemy deceived me and tried to conceal the miracle that God continued to provide for him. Yes, it would have been so wonderful for Henry to have received a brand new heart. However, it still boggles my mind when I look back and remember all that Henry did in his remaining years. It certainly boggled his doctor’s minds too.
A fresh perspective from God’s truth
Now, every morning when I open my eyes, after saying good morning to the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit, I ask for strength for today. Then I simply trust God.
His mercies are new every morning, and just because things may not appear as we wanted, God still meets us by His Holy Spirit. We have a friend in Him who sticks closer than a brother. We often think about our tomorrows as if they were today. But God instructs us in His Word to only take thought for the things of today. Can you believe God for your provision and strength just for today?
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day [is] the evil thereof. Matthew 6:34 KJV
