Open Your Ears, Then Open Your Mouth

How to know in “real-time” what is on God’s heart, so we can speak a word in season to the weary. Have a tongue of the learned!

What is on God’s Heart?

There is so much happening in the world today; things are becoming wilder and wilder. And I, more than ever, want to hear God’s heart. I want to know in “real-time” what is happening in His heart that He wants to express on the earth. I desire to be part of His will being done on earth as it is in heaven.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:10 KJV

As a church and ministry, we have been growing up into God’s amazing principles of truth for a long time. At the core of everything we teach and do, we try to function according to what God has laid out for us in His Word. We always want to walk according to the precepts of God because walking in His truth is our foundation. But how can we be prepared to hear in season what is on God’s heart and speak a word to someone weary? How can we be ready instantly and have the tongue of the learned?

The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. Isaiah 50:4 KJV

A Word in Season

For a while, I have been asking God how to speak that perfect word from heaven to people when He opens up an opportunity to do so. First and foremost, I believe it will come from the wealth of truth that we have stored up within us over the years. God will anoint us to go forth and say things that maybe we have never said before—perhaps we did not know how to say them, or that they were even there. The truth that we have stored up in our hearts from His Word is what He will release at an appointed time in the situations that we are in.

But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost. Mark 13:11 KJV

The next thing I noticed is that we have to ask. In Isaiah 50:4, when it says the Lord has given us the tongue of the learned, this tells me it is something we did not have previously. We have to ask God, and He has to give it to us. I hope we continue to grow in speaking a word in season to people who are weary—recognizing, in humility, that we do not know what we need to say in these days. We do not know what to say in certain situations, but we can ask the Heavenly Father to give us the tongue of the learned so we will hear Him and speak the things in those moments that only the Holy Spirit could put on our hearts to say.

We can also pray that His words will come with boldness. Paul prayed in Ephesians that he would speak boldly; the Greek word for boldly means to “speak without hindrance” or “to have a confidence in spirit and demeanor”. Speaking boldly means we can say what is on our hearts clearly, and without fear. Paul prayed for boldness in advance. I, too, ask God that I might speak boldly and without fear, whatever God puts on my heart.

And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, Ephesians 6:19 KJV

Open Your Ears

After we have read His Word and prayed, how can we hear what is going on in His heart? Returning to Isaiah 50:4, it says He wakens our ears morning by morning. This is the preparation that we need for our hearts to hear from Him: we turn to Him first thing in the morning so that we can discern what He is saying and be open to His voice. God is with us when we wake up and wants to speak to us. He covers us with new mercies every morning. We must shut out the distractions and noise and give our hearts to Him every morning.

It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23 KJV

Let us settle ourselves before God first to hear where He is leading us. We can ask God to help us to open our ears to hear Him—His still, small voice. But we must quiet ourselves, listen, and always be aware of the gentleness of the Holy Spirit that would speak to us.

Let Us Obey

After we have quieted ourselves and heard His voice, then we obey. When God puts something on our hearts, we need to do it. When God gives us something to say, we need to say it. Obeying is essential when He nudges us; it is rebellion when we disobey. We must put down the rebellion and tell the Father we will do whatever He speaks to us. We must not be rebellious or turn away.

The Lord God hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back. Isaiah 50:5 KJV

Looking at John 12, Jesus was constantly obedient to the Father when He was upon the earth. He told us that He did not do what He wanted to do. He did not speak His own words; He only said what the Father told Him to say. Whatever the Father said to Him is what He spoke. He was in a place of giving, serving, and giving glory to God. He was not into self-promotion; He simply obeyed the Father.

For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. John 12:49 KJV

I want to be like Jesus! Let us turn away our hearts from promoting ourselves and be about the business of the Lord, which is promoting Him. As we do this, we will hear His voice in a new way—through impressions or maybe new compassion to speak from that will help others and help extend the Kingdom of God in the midst of the chaos. I want to be obedient to what He is saying so I am not in rebellion.

Open Your Mouth

Another key to hearing from God is to keep a continual connection with Him. We ought to talk to God constantly. He wants to hear our voices in the morning, in the middle of the day, and throughout the day. Let Him hear our voices praising Him, telling Him we love Him, and asking Him for help. As we talk to Him, He is listening.

Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my meditation. Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray. My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. Psalm 5:1-3 KJV

We must let Him hear our voices. We can ask Him questions, praise Him, and get Him involved. We can invite Him into everything in our lives, and He will give us direction. This is what it means to abide in Him.

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. John 15:7 KJV

We need to know that we are in the right place at the right time, around the right people, and saying the right things. The only way to do this is to abide in the vine. We need to make our home in Jesus and in God’s heart. We need to walk with Him and be His friend. We can talk to Him about anything and everything and listen to Him speak.

God’s Heart in Real Time

As we talk to Him, He will give us direction. We need to hear the guidance of the Holy Spirit at all times because we are in a season like never before. Isaiah tells us no matter what we are going through, we will hear a voice behind us telling us to turn to the right or turn to the left. It will tell us which way to go and to walk in it.

And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers: And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. Isaiah 30:20-21 KJV

I want His voice to guide me in everything I do. As I have been partnering with the Heavenly Father in all of these things, I have found Him to be faithful in bringing forth what I need right when I need it. He has spoken to and directed me in ways I could not have imagined. Let this encourage you to read His Word, talk to Him, listen for His voice, and obey it.

Speak to the Weary

There is such a great need in the world today. God wants to bring forth His Kingdom into the earth through us as vessels. He wants to set free people who are in captivity. Many are blind, bruised, and need to be delivered. God wants to release them—and we could be the ones to speak a word that brings healing or recovery.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. Luke 4:18-19 KJV

He has anointed us to help those who need it. As we prepare our hearts, we will be ready to hear Him in the exact moment and be sensitive to how He would guide us. We are in a new season, and God wants to use us powerfully, but we must hear and obey Him. He wants to give us fresh manna for others because He wants to help them. So open your ears then open your mouth in obedience to His Spirit.

Blessings,

Pastor Adrienne Shales
