The true cause of high cholesterol and how to defeat it in your life from a Biblical perspective.
What’s the real cause of high cholesterol?
When you hear the word cholesterol, it may elicit images of little yellow globs or pollen-looking spores floating around in your arteries. The medical community is quick to warn us about the dangers of elevated cholesterol. Is it possible there is an unnecessary fear of cholesterol due to lack of understanding? There are a lot of factors that go into the elevation of cholesterol in your body. In this post, we will take a look at the spiritual root cause of high cholesterol. Then we will wrap up with a secondary reason for the elevation of cholesterol that may be a sign that we are finding comfort in the wrong place.
“360-degree” discernment
At Be in Health®, we have a spiritual understanding of the high cholesterol levels of triglycerides, or hypertriglyceridemia. Instead of going into more anxiety and stress with this diagnosis, let’s view this pervasive issue with “360-degree” discernment.
Your thoughts affect your cholesterol
First, is high cholesterol a disease unto death (1 John 5:16-17 KJV)? Initially, no, but maybe in the long haul, yes. Cholesterol levels fluctuate due to many factors, but coupled with stinkin’-thinkin’ (thoughts that are contrary to God’s Word), which produce high cholesterol, it could lead to death.
So what are the thoughts that we should be paying attention to that are behind all this?
The thoughts, mindsets, and spirituality behind high cholesterol are very similar to those that are behind autoimmune diseases; they keep you from being able to agree with God’s heart and mind about who you are – your identity.
The possible spiritual roots
The possible spiritual roots and mindsets behind high cholesterol are: self-conflict, self-loathing, and anger against one’s identity. The source of these thoughts is an invisible evil kingdom that (wait for it…) doesn’t love itself! That’s right; all the spirits that rebelled with Lucifer don’t love themselves for their personal choice to follow him in rebellion against God. When you follow their thoughts as if they are your thoughts, your body becomes the victim.
How long-term negative thoughts can lead to death
In the case of high cholesterol, let’s consider how something that is not originally a sin unto death becomes one. Growing old is not a sin, and even death is not a sin, so what are the Scriptures talking about? Look at 1 John 5 for God’s mind on what death means and how to pray for someone with this kind of sin:
If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. – All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death. 1 John 5:16-17
A slow, lurking issue
If you’ve tracked with our teaching for a bit, you would recognize that the possible spiritual roots behind cancer are a sin unto death. We don’t go into prayer right away for someone when they need to first be discipled on how to repent for the dead work behind cancer. In the case of high cholesterol, the effects of the sin issue is a slower process that could be around for years, asymptomatic, and lurking.
Evaluating your habitual thoughts
This undercurrent of habitual thinking is what needs to be evaluated from time to time. We need to ensure our thoughts are all leading to a godly conclusion. The source of our thoughts can be difficult to discern if you’re not apprehending and appropriating the Word of God in your life on an ongoing basis.
Habits don’t form out of thin air. They all come from an original source. Maybe you’ve wished that good habits would high-jack you and make you suddenly do things that bless everyone around you.
What is iniquity?
However, iniquity is so familiar to us; we often don’t see what needs changing until we see the damage it is causing. Iniquity is the wrong way of thinking or speaking that tracks through our family trees from generation to generation. It may seem so normal that we don’t know it is there until it comes up in our relationships with others.
Is it really that big of a deal?
The habits of self-loathing and self-abasement must manifest themselves, and many times it is as simple as putting yourself down. “I’m so stupid. I always do dumb stuff like that. I can’t stand it when I do that. I’m never going to get it right.”
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. Luke 6:45
Spiritual baggage accumulates just like the cholesterol
Add up enough self-putdowns, and what do you get? It is not rocket science, but understanding how this works is more important than landing on the moon. Your liver will begin to overproduce LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Why? Because your enemy knows the liver is responsible for getting rid of waste in your blood. The scripture says that life is in the blood (Leviticus 17:11 KJV).
Long-term thinking of self-rejection and self-conflict will lead to a slow death through your blood as your arteries choke on that damaging accumulation of cholesterol.
A perfect Scripture that explains the repercussions of long-term sin is in Galatians:
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told [you] in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21
If you DO, or habitually practice, strife against yourself, you lose out on some of the blessings that are in the kingdom of God.
Keeping the “360-Degree” perspective
As I said earlier, this article needs to stay “360-degrees” in discernment. We can’t go black and white, thinking that all high cholesterol readings are rooted in this particular sin issue. Let’s explore how elevated cholesterol is a secondary issue in other areas of life.
Now we get to diet
There is a reason why you have to fast eight hours before a blood-lipid panel. Those nurses with needles want to know what is baseline in your blood once it has time to purge out extra cholesterol. If you ate a Dave’s Double Bacon Burger and 23 minutes later had a blood test, you’d be in the red zone. But give your body eightish hours to get rid of the cholesterol in Dave’s burger, you might be just fine and back to normal.
Where do you look to for comfort?
However, if you have a lifestyle of comforting yourself with food items that put a strain on the liver with excess cholesterol, that poor organ doesn’t have time to get rid of all the waste. God’s design of keeping cholesterol levels in balance is fantastic! But left open to the enemy’s devices, this barometer will respond to the food that you may be eating to comfort yourself in place of receiving your comfort from God.
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; 2 Corinthians 1:3
For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. John 16:27
7 things that you can do to overcome the root cause of high cholesterol:
- Be kind to yourself and let God the Father comfort you.
- Practice moderation – rule over the urges that want that quick fix and ask the Father to deliver you.
- Don’t be hard on yourself – appropriate the mercy of God into the ‘less beautiful’ places of your heart. We all need God’s new mercies every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23)
- Repent for the dead work of self-conflict and self-abasement.
- Humble yourself. Don’t push away the love of the Father just because you’ve had a wrong thought about yourself.
- Ask God to teach you how to discern thoughts that are not your own but are from the enemy.
- Form a heart that receives from the Father and let Him heal you from the inside out.
