Spiritual Roots of Disease

Uncovering the Spiritual Causes & Roots of Disease -Discover why we get sick and how to overcome disease in your life.

Part 1 of 3

Why people get sick.

Have you ever wondered why people get sick? It may seem like random chance – some people just pick it up or they are destined to have it because of their genetics. But that is not what the Word of God says. The Word says that the curse causeless shall not come (Proverbs 26:2 KJV). Do you think that sickness and disease is a blessing or a curse? The Word also says that the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy; but Christ came that we would have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10 KJV). So does disease represent abundance and wholeness of life or does it lead to death and destruction in a person’s life? Is it possible that maybe there are spiritual roots of disease?

We may not want to ask these questions because they may lead us to an uncomfortable conclusion. But if we sincerely desire to walk in health and wholeness of life, not only physically but mentally and spiritually as well, these are important questions to search out.

The keys are in the Bible.

That is what Dr. Henry Wright and his team at Be in Health® have been doing for more than twenty-five years. When Dr. Wright began asking these questions and seeking God, the Holy Spirit, and His Word for the answers, he came to an amazing discovery: The Word not only tells us where disease comes from but it also provides keys to our freedom and healing! This is where he discovered the spiritual causes of illness.

One of the first scriptures that Dr. Wright came across that clued him in to the possibility of spiritually rooted disease is found in Proverbs:

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. Proverbs 17:22 KJV

Because of his understanding of human physiology, Dr. Wright knew that the marrow is found in the bones and the marrow is the center of the immune system. So if the marrow of the bones is dried up, guess what goes down with it? That’s right, the immune system!

He was able to test this revelation on a lady who he was visiting who was sick with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS/EI), and he asked her who broke her heart. She responded with tears. He was able to pray with her and she received the healing that she needed for her heart. Can you guess what the consequence of that was? She was healed physically in her body!

Where we’ve come since then

That was only the beginning. Over the years, Dr. Wright along with his Team at Be in Health have discovered that over 80% of diseases are spiritually rooted, including high blood pressure and chronic fatigue syndrome. What’s even more profound is that spiritually rooted diseases are actually the result of separation on one or more of three levels:

  1. Separation from God, His Word, and His love.
  2. Separation from yourself.
  3. Separation from others.

Our spirit may be broken if we’ve experienced breakdown in one or more of these three levels.

How are we separated from God?

You may wonder how we can be separated from God when we are a believer and have received the free gift of salvation through Christ Jesus. Yet how many of us struggle with really believing that God loves us?

Many of us have had an earthly father who maybe did not know how to represent Father God’s love to us. Therefore, Father God is guilty by association. We imagine Him to be watching our every move ready to strike us if we are bad. Maybe Jesus is our good buddy but we’d rather not have to deal with the Father. Yet Jesus said that He came to show us the Father and that if we’ve seen Jesus, we’ve seen the Father.

If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? John 14:7-9 KJV

How can we have a relationship with Father God if we so greatly fear Him and fear to seek God? How can we even begin to obey the first and greatest commandment if there is a breach in relationship at this level?

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Matthew 22:37-39 KJV

Recognizing the enemy’s lies

We must understand the root cause and that the enemy will try to plant all sorts of lies in our hearts in order to keep us from loving God. He will plant fear, guilt, shame, and even accusation towards God. He will try to get us to believe that disease comes from God or that we are not good enough to receive God’s love or healing. The enemy wants us to think that we need to perform perfectly in order to receive God’s love but the Word says otherwise. God’s Word says that nothing can separate us from God’s love.

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 KJV

If nothing we do can separate us from God’s love, why then do we have a problem receiving it?

Here is where we need to learn separation. We need to understand that we do not wrestle with flesh and blood. We wrestle against the invisible powers of the enemy that are warring against us to keep us from our identity as children of God and His love.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Ephesians 6:12 KJV

The enemy will bring thoughts of unloving, self-hatred, rejection, fear – whatever he can in order to make us believe that we are separated from God’s love or unworthy of it. When we believe these lies and agree with them, we give the enemy an open door into our life. The enemy needs to attack our identity as sons and daughters of God so that we can never reach the full potential of who we were created to be for God’s Kingdom.

Autoimmune diseases and loving yourself

Dr. Henry Wright says this in his book, A More Excellent Way, “In this ministry, we deal with many autoimmune diseases: lupus, Crohn’s disease, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and MS, to name a few. All autoimmune and immune system diseases have possible spiritual roots of self-hatred, self-bitterness, and guilt. Diabetes can be defeated. Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis and blood pressure can be defeated. All autoimmune diseases can be defeated or can be prevented.”

Removing blocks

When we line our hearts up again with our Father’s heart for us. When we remove the blocks of the enemy that are in the way and learn how to love God and love ourselves again, healing on this level can begin to come forth. The next step is learning how to walk in love and forgiveness in relationships with others.
