What you need to know to discern and overcome self-pity in your life
Do your circumstances or our symptoms seem so overwhelming that you can’t see past them? Do you feel hopeless and oppressed and like no one cares or understands what you’re going through? Do you feel like you can’t move forward in your Overcomer’s Journey, like you’ve hit a wall? Do you ever catch yourself thinking, “If only this person or circumstance would change, then my life would be better.”? It could be that self-pity is influencing your life. Self-pity has the potential to prevent you from moving forward in your Overcomers’ Journey and keeps you from receiving your healing in God. We have good news, it is not you, and you can overcome self-pity!
It’s time to take your life back
It is essential to recognize the spirit of self-pity to move forward in your Overcomer’s Journey. Dr. Henry W. Wright often said that self-pity is the superglue of hell that binds you to your past (find his complete teaching on Self-Pity HERE). It’s an unhealthy infatuation with one’s past traumas and current adverse circumstances.
In addition, self-pity projects past failures into one’s future. As a result, a person begins to feel helpless and hopeless and becomes a perpetual victim of their circumstances. It may cause a person to lose confidence and self-esteem and focus only on bad things and negativity in their lives. They become entangled in their own pity party and often embrace feelings of depression.
Self-pity is self-indulgent
As its name implies, self-pity is a significant player in the kingdom of self; it’s a form of self-idolatry. It may cause a person to become self-indulgent, dwelling so much on their own issues that they become unaware of other people’s needs and struggles around them. It may falsely present itself as self-compassion and even demands others’ compassion. And although one may believe that they need others’ sympathy to feel better, that neediness can never be satisfied.
Self-pity may cause a person to control others out of fear and is often only one step away from outbursts of anger and rage. It may play on other people’s love in an effort to manipulate them into catering to their needs and is very capable of destroying relationships. A person under self-pity’s influence will often say things like, “You just don’t understand.” or “You just don’t care about me.”
Overcoming self-pity requires facing reality
A person who struggles with self-pity will often be quick to blame others or circumstances. They may feel like a perpetual victim. It also makes it very difficult to take personal responsibility for their actions or life.
No matter how difficult it may feel to face it, a person needs to recognize this spirit’s influence in their lives and come out of agreement with it. Recognition and repentance may take a significant amount of humility and courage to face. Although self-pity may act small and insignificant, it’s often an issue deeply rooted in pride and in one’s identity. A person may have been trained in it their whole life, or it may even have tracked down through their generations.
Real solutions for overcoming self-pity
If you recognize that self-pity is influencing your life, it’s time to get back into the race as an overcomer, trusting in God that He will be faithful to complete the good work which He has started in you. Don’t let self-pity steal your faith or your joy any longer. In Christ we are more than conquerors!
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? [shall] tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? … 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:35-39 KJV
If you recognize the influence of self-pity in your life, today is the day of salvation! You can repent before God for agreeing with the spirit of self-pity and its lies. And then you can command it to leave you alone in Jesus’ name.
