What is our Walk Out Journey?
Walk Out is a term we often use at Be in Health. We frequently talk about walking out our journeys with God and being overcomers. Walk Out is the title of a class we teach on the last day of our For My Life Retreat. And while it is only an hour-long class, it may be the most important one we teach! You may be wondering: what is Walk Out?
We have coined the term Walk Out after the verse in Philippians 2:12. It says, “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” Walk Out is the working out of our salvation.
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Philippians 2:12 KJV
Walking Out Of Prison
Another picture we like to use is from the Book of Acts. When Paul and Silas were in prison, God supernaturally broke their chains. As they praised God in prison at midnight, the Bible says the doors of their cells were opened, and their bands were loosed. But even though their bands were loosed, they still had to get up and walk out of the prison.
²³And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: ²⁴Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. ²⁵And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. ²⁶And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed. Acts 16:23-26 KJV
This is a picture of what we do as Believers. God has loosed our bands and set us free when we put our trust in Him. When we become saved, the cell doors have been opened for us. But we still have to choose to get up and walk out into our freedom. God gives us the choice and freedom to get up and walk out of the things that have once bound us. This is Walk Out—we walk out of the prison of old ways of thinking, speaking, and acting, and change into God’s ways of thinking, speaking, and acting instead.
Let us Cleanse Ourselves
Another important verse for Walk Out is 2 Corinthians 7:1. It says:
Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Corinthians 7:1 KJV
This verse makes it clear that, as Believers, we need to cleanse ourselves from filthiness of the flesh and spirit. This is how we perfect ourselves in holiness. The word perfect in this verse is another word for accomplish or make. So Paul is instructing believers (the dearly beloved) in Corinth to cleanse themselves of filthiness of flesh and spirit and also to make themselves holy. This verse is another example of New Testament instruction to grow in holiness as Believers. We grow in holiness by thinking, speaking, and acting like God does.
The Purpose of Walk Out
So now that you know what Walk Out is, let us look at why we need to Walk Out. Jesus said in John 15 that we should keep His commandments if we love Him.
If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15 KJV
Keeping God’s commandments is a way to demonstrate our love toward Him. When we grow in our obedience to Him, we demonstrate our love toward Him every time we keep one of His commandments.
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 1 John 5:3 KJV
The Bible is filled with commandments—do we endeavor to follow all of them? Are we trying to be obedient even in the little things? What about not fearing? What about trusting God in all things? And what about putting away bitterness and anger? These are not suggestions but commandments. We demonstrate our love toward God when we remember and keep all of His commandments.
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27 KJV
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. Proverbs 3:15 KJV
Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: Ephesians 4:31 KJV
Being a Believer is not just about trying to obey some of God’s commandments but fulfilling all of them. Keeping His commandments is how we Walk Out our journeys with Christ, and it is important because it is how we demonstrate our love toward Him.
Promises for Overcomers
Another reason to Walk Out of areas where we have previously been bound is that in the Book of Revelation, there are many wonderful promises for those who overcome.
He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. Revelation 21:7 KJV
We want to be those who overcome all things just like Jesus did. We want to inherit all the wonderful blessings and eternal promises God has for us when we overcome. Overcomers think, speak, and act like God does, and He promises great things for them!
How do we Overcome?
Now we know what is Walk Out and why we need to Walk Out—but how do we Walk Out? People often come to our For My Life Retreat and receive so much revelation and understanding from the Word of God that is essential to their freedom and health, but they often do not know what to do with it and how to walk it out in everyday life.
Being an overcomer takes practice and time. It is not something that we are efficient at right away. If the enemy had many years to train us in his thoughts and emotions, it might take some time to undo his ways and learn to do things according to God’s ways. So the first thing we must do is be patient with ourselves and not listen to the enemy’s accusations that we should have it all figured out already. The Bible says a just man falls seven times but gets back up again.
For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. Proverbs 24:16 KJV
Keep Moving Forward in Walk Out
Proverbs 24:16 is a great verse for us to remember that all we need to do is keep moving forward. When we mess up and fail because we fell back into an old pattern of how we used to do things, all we need to do is get back up and walk with God. He knows us and our weaknesses, and He wants to help us. We must move past the mistake and get back up again so He can help us.
The enemy will always try to come and tempt us. He came to tempt Jesus in all things, so he will tempt us too. And he never plays fair; he always comes when we are most vulnerable because he wants to take us off guard. He has studied us and our generations and knows our weaknesses. When we fall for his temptations, we must not give up but try again.
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15 KJV
Count it All Joy
Since we know the enemy will come to tempt us, another key to overcoming is to have a plan for when he comes so that we are ready. A study of the first chapter of James is an excellent place to start to prepare ourselves. James exhorts us that we are to count it all joy when we are tempted. And it says that the trying of our faith produces patience and maturity.
²My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; ³Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. ⁴But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. James 1:2-4 KJV
Do we count it all joy when we are tempted to go into bitterness because someone has done something to hurt or offend us? Do we count it all joy when difficult things happen to us, and we are tempted to get angry? Do we count it all joy when there is bad news, and we are tempted to get into fear? The Bible says to count it all joy when we fall into temptation because we know the benefits of patience and maturity will come.
Verse 12 also says that when we endure temptation, we shall receive the crown of life.
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. James 1:12 KJV
We can choose to associate good things with temptation because the Bible tells us so. We can choose to align our thinking with the Word of God, which says He will grow us spiritually through temptations. We can choose to believe that God will bless us as a result of temptation. So when the enemy comes at us with temptation, we can prepare ourselves to say, “oh, joy” instead of “oh, no”.
Renewing Our Minds is How to Prepare for Walk Out
The next thing we can do is to renew our minds through the Word of God. The Bible says that we are sanctified by the truth of God’s Word. As we spend time in His Word, meditate upon it, and get to know it—we renew our minds, which is a big part of the sanctification process.
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. John 17:17 KJV
Renewing our minds through the truth is how we eliminate all the old programming from the enemy. We can become sanctified in our minds to have the mind of Christ and think like the Word of God. This sanctification process will take time, but God can help us. The enemy’s lies will start to dissipate, and the truth of God’s Word will become our focus. Our personality will start to change to be more like God. If we want to think, speak, and act like God then we must spend time in His Word and let it transform us.
For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:16 KJV
Signs and Wonders
Another step of Walk Out is obeying Jesus when He told us to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature. This should be part of our normal walk with God because He wants to use us to help and bless other people.
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15 KJV
When we have been baptized in the Holy Spirit, we have Him residing within us and available to help us with all of our needs. And it says in verse 17 that signs and wonders shall follow those who believe. It is that simple—we can lay hands on people and believe God that He wants to help others through us, even in our weaknesses. This should be a normal part of our everyday lives, partnering with God to serve others; this is part of our Walk Out.
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; Mark 16:17 KJV
The Main Point of Our Walk Out
Now that we understand what Walk Out is, why it is important, and a few ways to Walk Out our journey with Christ, here are just a few more helpful hints for us to focus upon. First, we never want to make healing or deliverance our motivating factor. Our motivating factor should always be our relationship with Father God and our obedience to Him. Relationship with Him is the main thing, always.
And as we walk out of something old, remember that we are walking toward something new. It is not just that we are leaving the old thing behind, but that we are going toward something else—and that is God’s Ways. We are not just putting off the old man; we are choosing to put on the new man, which involves righteousness and holiness. This is obedience, sanctification, and the essence of Walk Out.
²²That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; ²³And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; ²⁴And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Ephesians 4:22-24
