Have you ever received prayer and laying on of hands for healing and believed in faith but not received your healing? Or maybe you’ve pursued the possible spiritual roots of your disease to see if perhaps there is a spiritual dynamic at play that caused your disease. There are times when we have discerned spiritual roots in our lives, repented, and found healing for our hearts in that area, and yet, our healing is still hindered. It’s in these times that we need to explore what might possibly be blocking our healing.
Spiritual Blocks to Healing is one of the classes that we present in the For My Life® Retreat. This is the retreat where you can learn how to find healing in God for your spirit, soul, and body. The Bible says that you will know the truth and the truth shall make you free. Today we want to present to you some truth that may be the key to unblocking your healing and restoring you to wholeness in God for your spirit, soul, and body.
Here are a few key points that we present in this teaching:
-Why does prayer and laying on of hands not always work as it should?
-Is it God’s will that I am healed?
-Isn’t faith alone enough to heal me?
-What does the Bible say about the spiritual blocks to healing?
-What could be blocking my healing?
God’s heart for your healing
We want to assure you that it is God’s will to heal you. However, He is a God of justice and wisdom just as much as He is a God of love, grace, and mercy. Therefore He knows that if we are in agreement with patterns of thought and action that are contrary to His ways, they are traps designed by the enemy to lead us to destruction and prevent us from receiving God’s best for us. In fact, they are open doors to the curse from the enemy, which is disease. God wants to heal and deliver you all the way, not just partway.
Let’s explore some of the scriptural blocks to healing. These are just a few examples of what we teach in the For My Life Retreat in the Spiritual Blocks to Healing class.
The #1 Block to Healing
If unforgiveness isn’t dealt with in a person’s life, they will not get any further in their healing journey. Here’s what Jesus said to His disciples about unforgiveness:
And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. 23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive [them], and ye shall have [them]. 25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. 26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses. Mark 11:22-26 KJV
Many people believe that they can just ask in faith and it should happen, but they miss verses 25 and 26 which are the condition for receiving forgiveness. Matthew 6:14-15 says it again, God will not forgive us if we are unwilling to forgive others.
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14-15 KJV
Through over 30 years of experience in teaching and ministering, Dr. Henry W. Wright discovered that unforgiveness was both a significant spiritual root to many diseases and a block to healing of any other diseases.
In his book entitled, Spiritual Blocks to Healing, Wright says this: “To deal with the first block to receiving from God, you must make peace in your heart with every person you have ever known and get it resolved before God. This does not mean that you have to make peace with them personally if they are not available. But it does mean you have to get it right with God concerning them.”
In the For My Life Retreat, we help attendees understand that unforgiveness is a root of bitterness. We lead them to healing in God for their spirit in any area of their lives where hurt and anger resides concerning another person or even themselves. They find that as they release that other person to God, they are set free to move forward in their journey as an overcomer. Many times, diseases are healed as a result.
Block #2: Are you correctly discerning the Lord’s body?
Most churches practice the sacrament of communion. But do we really understand what it means and what we are agreeing with and receiving when we take it? 1 Corinthians 11:27-30 says this:
Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink [this] cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of [that] bread, and drink of [that] cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this cause many [are] weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. 1 Corinthians 11:27-30 KJV
What does it mean to eat the bread and drink the cup unworthily?
First, let’s explore what communion represents. The bread represents His body that was broken for us for freedom of the curse of disease. The Word says that by His stripes we are healed; that is His body broken for us.
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he [was] wounded for our transgressions, [he was] bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace [was] upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:4-5 KJV
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare [our] sicknesses. Matthew 8:17 KJV
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. 1 Peter 2:24 KJV
The cup represents the blood of Christ that was shed for the forgiveness of our sins. According to the scripture, there can be no forgiveness of sins without the shedding of blood. When Jesus died on the cross for our sins, He effectively removed the need to sacrifice animals according to the Old Testament law. He made it possible for us to receive forgiveness through belief, repentance, and a relationship with Him.
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Matthew 26:28 KJV
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. Hebrews 9:22 KJV
Going back to 1 Corinthians 11:27-30, we see that it is possible to take communion unworthily. The consequence of taking communion unworthily is that many people in the Body of Christ are sick and “sleep” (which means dying prematurely). If we don’t want to be sickly and die prematurely, we must learn how to discern the Lord’s body appropriately and participate in and receive everything it represents.
So what does that mean and how can we practice it in our lives? According to Dr. Wright, there are three aspects of how communion can represent a block to our healing.
Aspect 1: We must judge ourselves
When we partake of the cup in communion and what it represents without first examining our hearts before God and repenting for our sin, we take the cup unworthily. It’s not adequate just to ask Him to forgive us of all our sins. We must allow Him to help us discern the specific works of the enemy in our lives so we can repent and remove them and be a vessel of honor for God’s glory. What is there to be forgiven for if we can’t even admit that we have sin in our lives?
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1 John 1:8-10 KJV
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 KJV
“We bring forth repentance so the forgiveness, deliverance, and healing can be appropriated and bring forth the full benefits provided in the Lord’s Supper.” Henry W. Wright
Aspect 2: We must discern each other
We are each members of the Body of Christ. But if the believers attack each other within the Body of Christ, we are attacking a part of His body. The Bible says that if you say you love the Lord but hate your brother, the love of God is not in you. This goes back to the first block to healing which is unforgiveness.
We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not [his] brother abideth in death. 1 John 3:14 KJV
Partaking of the Lord’s Supper in communion represents our participation with everything that His death and resurrection represents. We are partaking in His body, and we are members of His body. Therefore, we are to lay our lives down in service and care for one another. How can we partake of His Body if we are actively working to destroy it by slander, strife, unforgiveness, offenses, gossip, envy, and jealousy, etc.?
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17 For we [being] many are one bread, [and] one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 KJV
The church needs to be the church and minister to one another and be a safe place for each member to deal with their stuff and recover themselves before God. We are to minister the life of God to each other. However, if we get hung up on each other’s issues, take offense, and talk about others badly, we are tearing down the Body of Christ, which opens the door to the curse and disease in our lives.
Aspect #3: Denying that healing is for today
If the bread represents Christ’s body which was broken for freedom from the curse and disease, then we need to believe and accept that healing is for today. If the doctrine that we believe tells us that healing passed away with the apostles two thousand years ago, we are denying the gift of the broken body that we are partaking in. That is negating half of what communion represents! We cannot be healed if we don’t believe that God heals. And that is a significant block to healing.
There is good news!
If you recognize any of these blocks to healing, remember that there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus. You can acknowledge it before God and repent, and He will be faithful and just to forgive your sins and cleanse you from all unrighteousness.
